Per Diem Surgical Neurophysiologist (IONM)
Already a CNIM and looking to pick up extra cases on your own schedule? We need experienced surgical neurophysiologists for per diem and part-time 1099 contract coverage in the Indianapolis area. You accept the cases that fit your calendar, earn $300 per completed case plus a $50 travel stipend, and we cover your malpractice insurance.
You'll be the in-room neurophysiologist: setting up, running and interpreting baseline and ongoing monitoring, and communicating changes in real time to the surgeon, anesthesia and the remote interpreting physician. The case mix is mostly routine spine surgery, with occasional carotid endarterectomy (CEA) cases. This is not a training role. It's built for seasoned technologists who can walk into an OR, get clean baselines and run a case independently.
Why You'll Love This Opportunity
- $300 per completed case, paid as a 1099 independent contractor.
- $50 travel stipend per case to cover mileage.
- Malpractice insurance provided: $1M per occurrence / $3M aggregate.
- Year-end bonus based on cases covered and experience gained. The biggest drivers are the quality of your monitoring work and the relationships you build with surgeons and OR staff.
- Help setting up an LLC for your contracting work, so you can save on business expenses as your caseload grows.
- Choose per diem (as-needed) or part-time (regular scheduled days), and accept only the cases that fit your availability.
What You'll Do
- Monitor spine procedures including ACDF, posterior cervical and lumbar decompression/fusion, laminectomy and microdiscectomy.
- Run multimodality monitoring as ordered: SSEPs, transcranial MEPs, free-run and triggered EMG (including pedicle screw testing), and train-of-four.
- On CEA cases, run continuous multichannel EEG with SSEPs and alert the team promptly to changes during cross-clamping.
- Review history and surgical plan before each case, and confirm the monitoring plan with the surgeon and interpreting physician.
- Apply electrodes with sterile, safe technique; obtain reliable baselines and troubleshoot technical problems.
- Distinguish technical from physiological signal changes and communicate them clearly to the surgeon, anesthesia and the remote physician.
- Coordinate with anesthesia on agents and neuromuscular blockade.
- Use the USMON platform for scheduling, clinical information, case documentation and remote physician supervision.
- Set up, transport and care for monitoring equipment, and report equipment issues.
- Follow HIPAA, infection control and each facility's policies.
What We're Looking For
- Active CNIM from ABRET on day one. CNIM-eligible candidates will not be considered.
- At least 2 years of independent, hands-on IONM experience as the primary in-room neurophysiologist.
- Proven ability to monitor spine cases independently with SSEP, MEP and EMG.
- Current BLS certification.
- Ability to pass a background check, drug screen and hospital credentialing, with immunizations current.
- Valid driver's license, reliable transportation and willingness to travel across the Indianapolis area.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lb of equipment and stand for long periods.
Nice to Have
- CEA experience, including intraoperative EEG interpretation during cross-clamping.
- R. EEG T. or R. NCS T. registry in addition to CNIM.
- Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, a health science or a related field.
- Experience on common IONM platforms such as Cadwell, Natus or Nihon Kohden.
- Experience with USMON or other remote, real-time physician oversight.
- Existing credentials at Indianapolis-area hospitals or ambulatory surgery centers, so you can start taking cases sooner.
Schedule, Travel and Work Environment
- Cases are typically weekday daytime, with occasional early starts. Add-on or urgent cases may be offered.
- Travel between hospitals and surgery centers in the Indianapolis metro and surrounding communities.
- OR environment with exposure to radiation (protective lead provided), bodily fluids and sharps.
